A home break-and-enter in Harewood resulted in a foot chase through the streets after a homeowner awoke to find a man in his bedroom.
The incident happened Feb. 18 in a home at the 600 block of Regal Street occupied by a father, with his wife and children upstairs and his brother who lives downstairs.
"[The father] wakes up and there's this guy in his bedroom, his kids are in the same bedroom with him, and what he first notices is that he's got his brother's lime-green packsack on," said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
The man and his brother, who was awakened by the commotion upstairs, chased the suspect out of the house and about two blocks down the street before they lost track of him near Georgia Avenue Elementary School.
A police dog was called in to trail the suspect's flight, but was unable to get a positive track and police have been unable to find the suspect who made off with an Asus tablet computer that was in the packsack.
The suspect is described as Caucasian, in his mid 20s, about 5-foot-6 with short brown hair and was wearing a dark-coloured hoodie.
