Bike thieves were back in the saddle, but not for long after they each rode off with the same Nanaimo RCMP bait bike during an operation Thursday.

One bait bike was stolen two separate times by individuals well-known to Nanaimo Mounties, according to an RCMP press release.

The thefts happened downtown between 10:20 and 11:20 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4.

Officers were watching the bait bike when a male suspect decided to ride off with it. It only took nine minutes for police to arrest the 37-year-old suspect for possession of stolen property and transfer him to Nanaimo RCMP detachment cells.

Less than one hour later, another individual who police say is very active in property-related offences, helped himself to the same bait bike police had deployed earlier. Twenty minutes later, the 41-year-old was also arrested for possession of stolen property and he too was jailed at the RCMP detachment.

Both men were released several hours later to appear in provincial court in Nanaimo on April 6.
