The Nanaimo Pottery Co-op’s annual Spring Sale will be held early this year.
The two-day event will take place at Country Club Centre, 3200 North Island Hwy., from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on April 29, and from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on April 30.
According to a release by pottery co-op member Cathy Winsby, approximately 14 potters will showcase a wide variety of pottery, from beautiful functional wares to amazing pieces of art.
Winsby, along with her mother Jane Perala, will participate in the event and have been busy all winter creating pots for the show.
Perala began making pottery 42 years ago, noted the release, and was a production potter for approximately 12 years before giving it up for other pursuits. However, when Winsby expressed an interest in the craft in 2018, Perala immediately signed her up for a weekend class.
“Cathy’s enthusiasm rekindled Jane’s love of clay and from there the pair immersed themselves in the craft,” read the release.
While mother and daughter work together on many aspects of the pottery making process, each creates their own uniquely styled pottery.
“My mother thought she would never be able to throw pots again on the wheel and was thrilled when she discovered she still had the skill,” said Winsby. “I like the hand-building process because I enjoy creating patterns to make various forms. It’s great working in the studio together and we’re constantly bouncing ideas off of each other.”
According to the Nanaimo Pottery Co-op website, www.nanaimopottery.ca, the group hosts two pottery shows a year in May and November.
