Nanaimo police turn to public to help solve Fitzwilliam Street purse snatching

NANAIMO – Woman suffers minor injuries and loses purse and groceries to purse snatcher in Old City Quarter.

Nanaimo police hope the public can help solve a recent purse snatching in Nanaimo's Old City Quarter.

The victim, a 59-year-old Nanaimo woman, was walking on Fitzwilliam Street, between Selby and Wesley streets, Dec. 28 when when she was accosted by a man wearing a black-brimmed baseball cap who pushed her to the ground, grabbed her purse and a grocery bag and fled.

The woman's glasses were broken and she sustained minor injuries in the assault, but the incident was not reported to police until the following morning.

The incident's location is a high-traffic area so police hope possible witnesses will come forward with information that could help catch the culprit.
