Police hope public can help identify this man

Nanaimo Mounties are asking for the public’s help to identify a man who robbed the Nicol Street Shell gas station at the corner of Milton and Nicol streets Monday.

The robbery happened shortly before 4 a.m. when a man walked into the store, flashed a 15-centimetre-long, silver-bladed hunting knife and demanded money from the till.

The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect also demanded cigarettes before he left, so the clerk gave him two packs of Pall Mall.

The suspect was last seen running down Milton Street toward Haliburton Street as the clerk sounded the store alarm to summon police.

A police dog team was unable to track the suspect, described as Caucasian, about 5-foot-10, and weighing about 180-200 pounds. He wore a yellow nylon windbreaker with a purple hoodie pulled over his head. His face and neck were covered by a purple scarf embroidered with tiny hearts. He also wore long grey pants and leather-strap sandals.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com.
