The public will get to see crime fighting tools of the trade when Nanaimo's Mounties host an open house of their detachment this weekend.

Police will showcase the resources they have at their disposal to fight crime when the event happens Saturday (May 10), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to to kick off National Police Week from May 12-16.

Centre piece for the open house will be the RCMP's tactical armoured vehicle, used to transport and protect emergency response team members.

The forensic identification unit will have a child friendly interactive display, plus police cars, motorcycles and the RCMP bike squad will be on display, too.

Police service dogs and their handlers will also be working the crowds and answering questions for visitors.

Officers are also tossing some burgers on the detachment's barbecue 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. by donation. All proceeds support Nanaimo Crime Stoppers.

"We're looking forward to it," said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. "We haven't hosted one since 2002. There's a lot of changes, a lot of additions and new resources at our disposal as well, so we're really looking forward to showing them off."
