Nanaimo man assaulted in home invasion

NANAIMO – Mounties investigating home invasion and assault in Harewood.

A Harewood man was punched and hit with a metal pole when three men burst into his home on Wattfield Avenue on the weekend.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the assault happened at about 2 a.m. Sunday when the 55-year-old victim answered a knock at his front door and was confronted by three men, all wearing bandanas.

The suspects struck him with the pole and then punched him in the face causing him to temporarily lose consciousness.

He told police he awoke to  see his alleged assailants run out his front door to a tan-coloured car that was parked across the street.

The victim discovered later that a black and silver Compaq computer, a black Motorola Moto G cellphone and a black leather wallet were missing.

He was examined at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for a possible concussion and later released.

The suspect who allegedly committed the assault is about six feet tall and walks with a noticeable limp. He wore a black skull bandana covering his mouth.

One of the other two remaining suspects was also Caucasian, very thin with blonde hair.

"Investigators are following up with the victim and will be conducting inquiries in the neighbourhood," said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman in a press release. "Although it is early in the investigation, it does not appear this was a random occurrence."
