Nanaimo intersection keeps dubious title as Island’s worst

Nanaimo’s top 10 most crash-prone intersections, according to ICBC statistics

A Nanaimo intersection retained the dubious title of the Island’s worst, even though crashes decreased there last year.

ICBC released 2022 crash data on Tuesday, June 27, and the north Nanaimo intersection of the old Island Highway, Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road remained the worst in the city and the worst on all of Vancouver Island with 61 crashes last year. That total was down from 74 crashes in 2021, but not by enough to drop the distinction as the Island’s worst.

Three other Nanaimo intersections were also in the top 10 worst on the Island: the old Island Highway, Bowen Road and Norwell Drive with 58; the old Island Highway, Mostar Road and Rutherford Road, with 56; and the old Island Highway at Enterprise Way, with 50.

Vancouver Island’s top 10 worst intersections (+/- from previous year):

  1. Nanaimo: Old Island Highway, Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road - 61 crashes (-13)
  2. Saanich: Douglas Street, Mackenzie Avenue and Patricia Bay Highway - 60 (+20)
  3. Courtenay: Island Highway at Ryan Road - 59 (+20)
  4. Nanaimo: Old Island Highway, Bowen Road and Norwell Drive - 58 (-2)
  5. Saanich: Patricia Bay Highway at Sayward Road - 57 (+24)
  6. Nanaimo: Old Island Highway, Mostar Road and Rutherford Road - 56 (+2)
  7. Duncan: Trans-Canada Highway at Trunk Road - 54 (-5)
  8. Victoria: Douglas Street, Gorge Road, Government Road and Hillside Avenue - 53 (+10)
  9. Nanaimo: Old Island Highway at Enterprise Way - 50 (+4)

Ladysmith’s top five worst intersections (+/- from previous year):

  1. Trans-Canada Highway, Davis Road and Chemainus Road - 17 crashes (+6)
  2. Trans-Canada Highway, Roberts Street and Transfer Beach Boulevard - 9 (-8)
  3. Trans-Canada Highway, First Avenue and Ludlow Road - 8 (-12)
  4. Trans-Canada Highway at Cedar Road (south) - 8 (+5)
  5. Trans-Canada Highway at Oyster Sto-lo Road - 7 (+1)

Lantzville’s worst intersection in 2022 was the Island Highway at Lantzville Road, which had 20 crashes, up 14 from the year before, followed by the Island Highway at Superior Road with 11 crashes and Island Highway at Ware Road with 10.

In Nanoose Bay, the most crash-prone intersection in 2022 was the Island Highway at Northwest Bay Logging Road, with 13 crashes, followed by the Island Highway at Northwest Bay Road with 10 crashes.

On Gabriola Island, North Road at Easthom Road with four crashes and North Road at Buttercup Road with three crashes were the worst.
