The RCMP is celebrating 150 years in Canada later this month and to commemorate the occasion, the Nanaimo detachment will host an open house.

The event on Saturday, May 13, will be the first RCMP open house in Nanaimo in five years and will include displays and interactive booths for all ages to give members of the public some insight into career opportunities, and allow them to see equipment used by officers.

Event organizers plan to have participation from the emergency response team, the Vancouver Island tactical team, the underwater recovery team, police dog services, traffic services, forensic services, the Nanaimo bike unit, and the explosives disposal unit. There will also be an RCMP patrol car for the young at heart to explore, and the tactical armoured vehicle and rigid-hull inflatable boat will also be there. Other booths will showcase Tour de Rock riders, Crime Stoppers and Nanaimo Community Policing.

“There will be displays and interactive booths and RCMP recruiting on hand to answer any questions of budding Mounties…” said Jon Stuart, the City of Nanaimo’s community policing coordinator, in a press release. “We are bringing back the popular tours of the detachment’s cell block and with any luck, Safety Bear will also be in attendance.”

The open house runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, Saturday, May 13, with opening ceremonies and cake at 10 a.m.
