No exterior renovation project too small to be considered by judges

Nanaimo Community Archives is promising no project is too small for the second annual Heritage House Renovation Awards.

The awards recognize any exterior renovation that enhances the overall character of a heritage home. The program was launched last year as fun contest people could participate in to help lighten the mood of the pandemic.

“I was delighted with last year’s response,” said Christine Meutzner, Nanaimo Community Archives manager. “It was truly a feel-good project for us and the recipients.”

Meutzner said Nanaimo Community Archives presented three awards because the projects were so well done that it was difficult to pick just one winner. All three were full exterior renovations, but two of them represented substantial changes from the original character of the structure. It was a homeowner on Haliburton Street who revitalized the original characteristics of the home who won the top prize.

Projects can be large or small and don’t have to be made to homes on Nanaimo’s Heritage Register.

“The other two were also excellent projects,” Meutzner said. “Anything that you do to an exterior of a heritage home, whether it’s on the register or not – and anything that represents a particular era. It doesn’t have to be a Victorian or Edwardian. You could have a great example of a typical ranch house from the ’50s that qualifies. Anything that enhance its character is eligible.”

To enter, send a minimum of three photographs and a short description of the project. Projects must be within Nanaimo city limits and have been completed during 2021. Deadline for submissions is May 10.
