A motorcyclist died in an early-morning crash on the old Island Highway today.
Nanaimo RCMP say the collision happened at 5:15 a.m. Monday, June 12, at the intersection of the old Island Highway and Oliver Road. Investigators were told that the motorcyclist, a man from Nanaimo riding a newer-model Yamaha, was travelling northbound and collided with a southbound Dodge pickup truck that was turning onto Oliver, sustaining critical injuries in the collision.
B.C. Ambulance Service was called to the scene and transported the victim to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. He was pronounced dead soon after arriving at the hospital and B.C. Coroners Service was advised.
The driver of the truck was not injured. He remained at the scene and co-operated with investigators and drugs and alcohol have been ruled out on his part, according to a Nanaimo RCMP press release.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash and a section of the highway was closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene and collected evidence.
Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services have been engaged and the family of the deceased has been notified.
Police are asking for anyone with dash-cam footage of the crash or of the vehicles involved being driven prior to the crash, to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2023- 19707.
