Lights in Nanaimo sky tied to lost kite

NANAIMO – Police speak with man about early morning kite flight.

The truth is out there, but it has nothing to do with extraterrestrials.

Police responded to an "X-file" Wednesday at about 1:30 a.m. after receiving multiple calls about unexplained lights that appeared to hover in the sky above north Nanaimo. Some people photographed and recorded video of the display.

A Nanaimo RCMP officer patrolling the area came upon a man in the Nanaimo North Town Centre parking lot who was flying a kite, which RCMP considers a strange thing to be doing at such an early hour.

When questioned, the man admitted he had been flying a box kite, with LED lights attached to it, at high altitude, possibly higher than 3,000 metres, when the line broke and he lost the kite.

"The man has been spoken to about the dangers associated with flying an object high enough to possibly pose a danger to flight traffic.  We also believe this was the source of the lights seen by many people floating in the sky," Cpl. Jon Stuart, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said in a press release.

No charges are being contemplated.

The incident was the most recent of reports of flashing lights over Nanaimo. There were multiple reports occurred in November, September and August.
