Police hope to reunite a large sum of cash with a man who left it behind in a Nanaimo shopping mall.
According to an RCMP press release, the money was found by a cleaning crew Dec. 31 and turned it over to police for safe keeping.
Investigators spoke with the cleaning crew and it is believed an elderly gentleman may have accidentally placed the money down and forgot about it. He is described as being in his 70s or 80s, 5-foot-2 to 5-foot-4, and was wearing an Irish cap and a grey scarf.
“The man was seen in the vicinity. There weren’t a lot of people in the mall at the time and [mall staff] put two and two together,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
Police will not say how much money was found other than to say it is an amount between $1,000 and $7,000.
“The true owner should know exactly how much was in [the container], what malls they may have been in and the container the money was found in,” O’Brien said. “Also, if the owner’s not found and doesn’t claim the money in 90 days the finder is eligible for the money.”
Anyone with information about who money belongs to is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2021-47805.
