Lantzville proposes sewer expansion with left-over money

More Lantzville residents could soon flush into the district’s sewer system thanks to about $700,000 remaining from the Phase 2 sewer project.

More Lantzville residents could soon flush into the district’s sewer system thanks to about $700,000 remaining from the Phase 2 sewer project.

That aspect of Lantzville’s sanitary sewer collection system project was completed last year.

Lantzville council voted Monday to direct staff to contact 42 property owners to see if they are interested in connecting to the system. They are among 100 properties earlier  eliminated from Phase 2 at the request of the province to reduce costs.

Lantzville Mayor Colin Haime said the sewer system was created to address soil contamination issues caused by failing septic systems.

“There have been soil quality issues raised,” said Haime about the area, along Lantzville Road between Leland Road and Winslow Road, being reconsidered.

Phase 2 was estimated at $4.8 million, with $3.2 million received from the federal and provincial Canada B.C. Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund. It included hookup for 205 residential and commercial properties in the lower Lantzville area.

Haime said reductions in construction costs enabled the project to come in under budget.

If there is enough interest after the initial informal consultation, it will become a more formal process, said Haime.

Haime said if the property owners want to become part of the Phase 2 enlargement, is will reduce costs for Phase 3 of the project.

Phase 1 was completed in 2008 for $3.6 million. Phase 3 estimates haven’t been completed and there is no start date.

Haime said the district is waiting to see if there is any government funding available before moving ahead with that part of the project.
