Independent investigators have determined there are ground to forward a report to Crown for potential charges against a Nanaimo RCMP officer.

The report, filed by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., “determined that reasonable grounds exist to believe that an officer may have committed offences in relation to the alleged application of force by a police officer.”

The investigation was in relation to the arrest of a female suspect who suffered serious injuries during the course of her arrest and detention, notes an IIO bulletin. The incident occurred Dec. 2, 2018, though the bulletin was released today, April 20.

“In order to approve the charges, the B.C. Prosecution Service must be satisfied that there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered by the IIO, and that prosecution is required in the public interest,” the bulletin adds.

The IIO investigates all police incidents that result in serious injury or death, regardless of any allegations of wrongdoing.
