The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has concluded that Nanaimo RCMP officers’ actions or inactions did not contribute to a man’s death earlier this spring.

The IIO B.C. investigation came after police were called to check the well-being of a man at about 11:25 a.m. on April 2.

According to an IIO B.C. report, the RCMP members responded to a call from a man concerned for his own well-being. When officers arrived, the man was entering a vehicle driven by a third party to go to the hospital.

Independent witnesses confirmed that the man left his home and went to the hospital and there was no further contact with police.

The following day, April 3, the man was found deceased by means that appeared to have been self-inflicted.

IIO B.C.’s chief civilian director reviewed the evidence, including medical records and civilian witness statements, and determined that the actions of the officer were appropriate and did not contribute to the man’s death, the report noted.

The IIO investigation is now concluded. The B.C. Coroners Service’s independent investigation into the man’s death continues.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia, which investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
