Police are looking for whoever is responsible for setting a small fire at University Village mall early Wednesday.

Ennis Mond, fire investigator with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, said someone put a cardboard box full of newspapers up against the northwest door of the Quality Foods store and lit it on fire around 5 a.m.

Damage was confined to the exterior of the door, with a little bit of smoke filtering into the building, he said.

A security guard noticed the blaze, which burned itself out by the time crews arrived, as it was set against a non-combustible exterior door.

“It wasn’t that big of a fire, but it is concerning,” said Mond.
