Garden plots turned over to Nanaimo Community Gardens Society

NANAIMO – Young Professionals handed over its south Nanaimo community garden to the Nanaimo Community Gardens Society.

South Nanaimo's community garden has a new caretaker.

The Young Professionals of Nanaimo recently turned over garden plots on the corner of Irwin and Needham streets to the Nanaimo Community Gardens Society. An official handing-over event was held on May 17.

According to Adam Hawryluk, YPN president, the intent was always to build the garden but have it run and supported by the community.

The society plans to host educational workshops and allow for hands-on volunteering by community groups and individuals in the coming season.

“This is ideal to have someone like the NCGS take it over because they are the ones that are skilled, whereas we are the ones maybe just with the idea and the manpower to build it,” he said.

The YPN will continue to keep the community garden on Turner Road and the Island Highway.
