Nanaimo Unitarian Shelter management announces hiring of Paul Manly

Nanaimo-Ladysmith’s former member of Parliament has moved from politics to the social service sector.

Paul Manly has been hired as executive director of the Nanaimo Unitarian Shelter, according to a press release from the shelter’s management team.

Manly said in the release that he is “very pleased” to be joining the shelter’s team.

“I have a deep commitment to working with people who face challenges and barriers in their lives and assisting them with meeting their immediate needs,” he said. “The Nanaimo Unitarian Shelter plays a crucial role in our community by providing emergency shelter and other basic necessities to community members in their time of need.”

Manly was elected MP in a byelection in 2019 and was re-elected later that year before losing his seat in 2021.

He has been a program coordinator with Nanaimo Foodshare, helping provide skills training and work experience for youths and others who face barriers to employment.

Ron Wilson, chairperson of the Nanaimo Unitarian Shelter’s management team, said in the release that the hiring is “great news” for the shelter and its clients.

“We know that with Paul’s passion, dedication and skills, we will continue the tradition of excellent leadership established by our previous executive directors,” Wilson said.
