Challenges facing the reconciliation process will be one of the focal points of Vancouver Island University's new Centre for Pre-Confederation Treaties and Reconciliation.
The centre will deal with reconciliation of human rights abuses in Canada's residential school system, while focusing on further research, understanding and dialogue related to treaties with First Nations that took place prior to Confederation.
Doug White III, university alumnus, lawyer and former Snuneymuxw First Nation chief, was named interim director.
“The critical project of treaty implementation and reconciliation requires a deep and shared understanding of the history of Crown-First Nation relations and a clear and shared view of what is required for reconciliation today in its fullest and proper form,” White said. “I’m happy that our communities have found a strong partner in VIU for this project.”
