Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s firefighters snuffed out a fire in a townhouse this morning.
Crews from three fire stations, as well as other first responders, were called to a townhouse complex in the 800 block of Short Avenue shortly before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27.
Crews on scene said there was a lot of smoke coming from the townhouse when they arrived, but the fire turned out to be minor and was quickly knocked down.
Capt. Blair Pinker, scene commander, said the fire started in a bedroom, but the cause hadn’t been determined. No one was home at the time and attempts were being made to contact the resident who had reportedly left the home earlier in the morning.
Pinker also credited the quick response to the scene with the addition of 20 newly hired firefighters that now crew a second fire truck in Nanaimo Fire Rescue Station No. 1, the city’s busiest fire station.
“With the additional apparatus and firefighters we able to respond a lot more quickly and we were able to start standing down other apparatus a lot sooner to free them up for other calls,” Pinker said.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
