Firefighters battled a blaze near Country Club Centre this afternoon.

Emergency crews were called out on Sunday, July 9, at approximately 3 p.m. to a house fire at the corner of Wellesley Ave and 106th Street in Nanaimo.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews on scene said one resident of the home was already safely outside when they arrived, but there was heavy fire coming from both the front and rear of the upper storey of the house.

As well, there was a grass fire spreading in the direction of the adjacent home, so firefighters worked both to put out the structure fire and also minimize the neighbouring house’s exposure to the fire.

Once the fire was out, crews searched both storeys of the home and determined that no one else was at home at the time of the fire.

The rental home had both upstairs and downstairs tenants who will be displaced as the house is not habitable. The upper storey of the house sustained “very significant” fire damage, crews said.
