A fire gutted a house in Extension, south of Nanaimo, in the early-morning hours today.
Volunteer firefighters were on scene in the mid morning on Wednesday, May 10, dousing remaining hot spots.
Extension Volunteer Fire Department reported on social media that fire crews responded to the blaze, in the 2300 block of Godfrey Road. Kevin Young, Extension Volunteer Fire Department chief, said firefighters were called at about 2:40 a.m. and the house was fully ablaze when they arrived.
“The caller indicated multiple explosions could be heard from the structure,” he said. “I surmise that was propane tanks and tires and that kind of stuff. Our crews observed the flames coming from the peak of the building, mainly from the back of the house, through the deck and roof. We assumed a defensive exterior attack with multiple attack lines hitting the exterior of the building and protecting exposures.”
Two people were outside the home when firefighters arrived. There were no reported injuries and Young said he was not aware of any pets in the residence.
Cranberry Fire Department provided mutual aid with firefighters and water tenders ferrying water to the fire scene. B.C. Ambulance also attended.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but Young said this is the third residential structure fire within Extension VFD’s protection area in seven weeks.
