Police are investigating after a fence was allegedly deliberately set on fire on the weekend.

The fire was reported at about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at a property located in the 500 block of Sixth Street.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, witnesses told police they saw a large group of nine to 12 teenagers standing next to the fence, which is wrapped in blue plastic tarp to prevent tagging. The tarp quickly caught on fire and the group fled just as the fire started to spread.

A neighbour extinguished the blaze before it could do further damage.

The suspects were last seen gathering at the lacrosse box near John Barsby Secondary School and several of the youths were wearing either red jackets or red hoodies.

“Investigators have no doubt the fire was intentionally set and are following up on several leads as to who is responsible,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, in the press release.

Anyone who has information on this incident is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file No. 2022-36624.
