Family, friends to hold vigil for Makayla Chang

Vigil for missing Nanaimo teen to be held at John Barsby Secondary School on Tuesday (May 2)

A gathering of “support and love” will be held for a Nanaimo teen who has been missing for more than a month.

Makayla Chang, 16, has been the focus of an intensive RCMP investigation to try to locate her. Chang has not been heard from since March 19 and police have not ruled out foul play in her disappearance.

To keep up awareness of the search for the missing teen, a Gathering of Love and Support For Makayla Chang will be held at John Barsby Secondary School on Tuesday (May 2) from 4-6 p.m.

Brandy McKee, family friend and event organizer, said as a mother she wanted to do something to show support from the community for Chang and her family.

“We want to keep her name circulated,” McKee, said. “It takes a village and we just want to show her that we miss her and we love her and we’re just gathering in her honour.”

Makayla’s grandmother Dolly Chang, family and supporters will give talks, stickers bearing Makayla’s name will be available and organizers are asking anyone who wants to attend to make signs of support for Makayla and her family. McKee said organizers also hope to have refreshments available at the event.

“We’re just asking people to make signs, come on out and anything else … We miss her and we love her and she’s not forgotten,” McKee said.
