Protesters asking for an end to old-growth logging blocked the highway in downtown Nanaimo today.
Extinction Rebellion organized protests on the roads in several B.C. cities on Monday, Jan. 10, including Nanaimo on the Trans-Canada Highway at Nicol and Milton streets. Two people were arrested.
The group said in a press release that it will block highway off-ramps and intersections “multiple times per week, and the frequency and scale of actions will escalate until all old growth logging is stopped.”
Vic Brice, an Extinction Rebellion Nanaimo spokesperson, said in the release that a stop to old-growth logging is “grounded in climate and biodiversity scientific evidence and is widely supported by the public in British Columbia.”
Zain Haq, a spokesperson and organizer for Extinction Rebellion’s provincewide Save Old Growth campaign, said his group is “declaring the Trans-Canada Highway a site of permanent, non-violent civil resistance.”
