Drive-by pepper-spraying in Nanaimo

Two men pepper-sprayed while waiting for bus in north Nanaimo.

Two men are the victims of what appears to be a drive-by pepper spraying in Nanaimo.

The incident happened at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday as two men, 24 and 21, were waiting at a bus stop near the Hammond Bay and Applecross roads intersection.

"A silver Jeep-looking vehicle pulled up and pepper-sprayed them both," said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

The men, who were disoriented by the attack, managed to get on a bus to Country Club Centre where they disembarked and called police.

O'Brien said by the time police arrived, the victims were recovering and did not require medical assistance.

Neither victim managed to get the licence plate number of the suspect vehicle.

This is the second apparently random pepper-spraying in less than a month.

Three teenagers were pepper-sprayed by an unknown attacker in a wooded area behind Seaview Elementary School Dec. 21.

Police do not have suspects and have not determined motives for either of the attacks.

Anyone with information about either of these incidents is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com.
