Dirt bike rider airlifted from crash scene

NANAIMO – Bike rider seriously injured in head-on crash with all-terrain vehicle.

A head-on collision between an all-terrain vehicle and a dirt bike resulted in one man being airlifted to Victoria General Hospital with serious injuries.

The collision happened at about 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Harewood Plains area near the Nanaimo Parkway.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue firefighters and B.C. Ambulance crews were met at the Nanaimo Parkway where witnesses said the accident scene was about 20 minutes' trek into the bush.

"It was quite a ways off the beaten path," said Karen Lindsay, Nanaimo Emergency Program manager.

ATV operators in the area helped get emergency crews to the crash scene where the 36-year-old man who had been operating the motorcycle suffered a compound leg fracture and other serious injuries.

"Timing was critical critical because of the injuries the individual sustained," Lindsay said.

The 42-year-old man who was operating the quad was able to walk from the scene with help from emergency crews.

Lindsay had no information about the condition of the man airlifted to Victoria.
