Motorists will no longer have to figure out for themselves which vehicles have the right of way at one of Harewood’s busiest intersections.

Fifth Street at Bruce Avenue is about to forgo four-way stop signs for traffic lights, according to the City of Nanaimo’s website.

Reconstruction of the intersection is expected to start Monday, July 10, and last until the fall. Work will be carried out Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., depending on weather and scheduling.

Planned upgrades include traffic signal lights, LED street lighting, concrete curbs, new pavement, new sidewalks and crosswalks, and dedicated cycling lanes designated with green paint.

Traffic will be reduced to one-lane alternating, so delays at the intersection should be expected, noted an advisory posted on social media. Construction signs will be posted and flag persons will be on duty to help with traffic flow. Motorists are asked to obey signs and flag persons’ directions. Commuters are asked to allow themselves extra travel time to account for delays when navigating through the site or take alternative routes to avoid the intersection.

Access to all businesses in the area will be maintained and construction will not affect business hours.
