The second phase of the City of Nanaimo’s midtown water supply project is starting with site preparations beginning next week.
The project is a multi-year upgrade to Nanaimo’s water supply infrastructure. On Monday, Jan. 9, crews will conduct site preparations that will involve equipment entering and exiting the Nanaimo Parkway and drivers are reminded to slow down in work zones and pay close attention to signage.
The work will involve removal of trees, but crews will preserve as many trees as possible and trees will be replanted when the project is completed, noted a city press release. Work is starting now to avoid disturbing birds during the spring nesting season.
The first section of preparation work will occur along the Nanaimo Parkway between East Wellington Road and south Jingle Pot Road. Following completion of that section, prep work will happen along the parkway between Crow’s Nest Place and College Drive.
Construction is slated to begin in the summer and cthe work will include “major pipeline trenching” along the parkway, the city noted.
“As one of the city’s most significant infrastructure projects to date draws closer to Phase 2, we are reminded of the importance of reliable access to safe and clean potable water in our community,” said John Elliot, director of public works, in the release. “We thank the public for their understanding and co-operation as we prepare for the work ahead.”
