Chamber to host business forum for Nanaimo election candidates

B.C. Ferries, carbon tax and natural gas rates just a few of the issues likely to be discussed.

Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce members will have a chance to have their business-related questions and concerns answered directly by Nanaimo area election candidates during a business forum Tuesday (April 23).

The forum takes place from 7-9 p.m. at the Coast Bastion Inn. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and members of the general public are welcome to attend.

Susan Allen, chief executive officer of the chamber, said all five Nanaimo riding candidates – Conservative Bryce Crigger, NDP incumbent Leonard Krog, Green Party Ian Gartshore, Liberal Walt Anderson, and independent Brunie Brunie — have confirmed their participation.

It should be interesting,” said Allen. “Some of the topics we expect to hear about are B.C. Ferries, (Fortis BC) common rate issue for the Island, and the carbon tax, and any other issues facing business. And I know some of the questions from the local community, even though they're municipal issues, the candidates will be asked where they stand on things like commercial tax rates, for example.”

Questions can be submitted beforehand by fax at 250-756-1584, e-mail at info@nanaimochamber.bc.ca, or an online form found at www.nanaimochamber.bc.ca. Only written submissions will be accepted and all questions will be looked at by scrutineers and asked by a moderator.
