The ribbon cutting officially opening the skate park in Cedar is set for Saturday (May 24).

Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with a blessing by Snuneymuxw elders followed by speeches and the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon. Also, a skate jam will run from noon to late-afternoon, with prizes, skateboard and BMX exhibitions and music.

Organizers say it will be accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

The $589,000 skate park is the culmination of 10 years of hard work and was made possible with $439,410 in Community Recreation Grant funding from the province, $99,500 from the Regional District of Nanaimo and $50,000 from the Cedar Skate Park Association.

The skate park is situated at the Cedar Community Secondary School grounds, in the southeast corner, off Walsh Road.
