A Nanaimo man, 54, is in acute care at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital after being hit by a car in Parksville.

Oceanside RCMP said the man was struck by a car at the Island Highway on-ramp, which merges traffic from the Port Alberni Highway in Parksville, at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said the man was conscious, but had sustained serious head and abdominal injuries.

The occupants of the car were not injured.

An RCMP collision analyst was called in to help determine the cause of the crash.

Police have not released the name of the victim.

Sgt. Darrell Robertson, Oceanside RCMP spokesman, said it was too early in the investigation to know if any charges are pending from the incident.

He also did not have a specific information on the victim's condition Wednesday morning.

"My understanding, though, is that it was expected that he would be released within the next couple of days," Robertson said.
