A new Regional District of Nanaimo director for the Extension-East Wellington will be chosen in late spring.

In a press release, the RDN said the byelection to name a successor to former electoral Area C (Extension, Nanaimo Lakes, East Wellington and Pleasant Valley) director Maureen Young, who died after a battle with cancer, will take place June 4.

People interested in running can pick up a nomination package at the RDN office on Hammond Bay Road and can begin submitting nomination papers beginning April 19 at 9 a.m. An appointment is needed and can be made by calling 250-390-4111 and the deadline to file is 4 p.m. on April 29.

The RDN had previously inquired about whether the B.C. government could exempt it from the byelection given COVID-19 case counts, at the time, and proximity to this fall’s municipal election, but in his response, Nathan Cullen, B.C. Minister of Municipal Affairs, said there weren’t “legislative mechanisms” to forgo the byelection.

Charles Pinker, alternate Area C director, will continue to serve until the new director has been chosen.
