The champion got his vindication.
Nanaimo’s Justin Lofstrom was confirmed Monday as the winner of the 50th Great International World Championship Bathtub Race.
Lofstrom set a new world record Sunday, finishing the course in his super-modified tub in a time of one hour, seven minutes and 30 seconds. Runner-up Chris Glenn of Port Coquitlam, who finished 34 seconds behind, challenged the result, as he thought Lofstrom’s tub was suspiciously fast.
Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society race officials opened up the motor of tub No. 340 on Monday and determined that it met the specifications in the super-modified division.
Lofstrom, runner-up the year before, was asked after Sunday’s race how he was able to set the world record.
“I don’t know, about two months of building a new motor, maybe,” he said.
After winning the anniversary race and setting a new standard in bathtub racing, the veteran tubber plans on defending his title.
“Oh, I’ll be back next year,” he said.
