When your home’s plumbing or heating/cooling system isn’t working, having a service team you can trust goes a long way to providing peace of mind and getting your home’s vital systems back in working order.

There’s a lot that goes into being a good plumbing or heating technician, and it isn’t all about learning the nuts and bolts of the trade — it goes deeper than that!

Rolling up his sleeves

Orville Wagar has owned Norm’s Mobile Plumbing and Heating for half a century — they’re celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. He bought the business from its founder, Norm LaBurge. Orville knew early on that he wanted to work in the trades, and from his youth, he showed a determination to succeed in his chosen profession. Growing up on a farm in Alberta taught Orville the value of rolling up his sleeves and getting the work done, a work ethic he applied to learning his trade and running his business.

Family ties

Hard work, customer service and honesty are all part of the job for Orville and his team — and it’s a close knit team. Norm’s Plumbing and Heating is a true family business. Son-in-law Dave joined the business, learning the trade from Orville. Together, they have weathered storms, and seen success, but all the while, the business grew.

And so did the family. Now, Dave’s three sons are the third generation, learning at Orville’s side as he passed on a lifetime of accumulated knowledge about the trade, and his belief that customer service, quality workmanship and honesty are what matter. Malcolm Rush says that, “We all love what we do out in the community and we always want to do the best for our customers and our hometown.”

Extended family

The team at Norm’s knows that without their community’s support over the years, their story would be different. The community has supported them through good times and tough times and they believe very strongly that being part of such a great community means giving back.

The HVAC for Hospice program, for example, supports the Nanaimo Community Hospice Society with a simple idea: For every HVAC installation, Norm’s donates directly to the Hospice with a goal to reach $10,000 by September 2022.

Of course, keeping community spirit strong starts with kids, and kids need fuel to be successful. The Nanaimo Ladysmith School Foundation is a great local program that provides hundreds of meals per week to children and families in need. With Tanks for Lunch, every water heater Norm’s installs includes a donation directly to the NLSF, meaning more kids have a better chance to meet their potential.
