Nanaimo RCMP took a serious tone when they were called to deal with an unattended case in a downtown parking garage.

Mounties were contacted Monday, Oct. 2, by a hotel staff member who found a black case and a gym bag.

“No one was around and it was not near a vehicle,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson.

The person who found the items suspected the case could possibly contain a firearm, and playing it safe, called police. But the tension around the discovery ended on a lighter note when an officer attended the scene and opened the case.

“The case contained a stringed instrument, possibly a lute or a mandolin,” O’Brien said.

Anyone who is missing a gym bag and musical instrument is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP detachment non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2023-34511.
