Soap box racers navigate hill at Old City Quarter in Nanaimo for fundraiser

Total of 46 racers take part in Hub City Soap Box Derby on Fitzwilliam Street

Soap box racers in Nanaimo navigated the hilly terrain of Fitzwilliam Street as part of a Nanaimo Child Development Centre fundraiser today.

The Hub City Soap Box Derby took place Saturday, Aug. 19 in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter with little kids and big kids taking part. Kathryn Scott, event coordinator, was pleased with how things turned out. A total of 46 racers took part, she said.

“It was really good,” said Scott. “There was a lot of community involvement. Everybody came out and supported the child development centre.”

Sawyer Foran, of Team River Racers, took first place in the little kids’ division, with Ezra Moss and The Rangers Crew taking second. Eric Pries and Overnight Parts from Japan and Alex Balderston and Team Pikachu tied for third.

Team Carson Henderson defended last year’s title, taking top spot again for the big kids’ division, followed by Team Scramble for Megson, Team Alair, Team Harbour Air and Team VMAC.

Scott said the amount of money raised is still being tabulated, but there was a goal of $25,000.
