A downpour last night was much needed, but it led to slick road conditions and several car crashes around the city.

Nanaimo RCMP reported being called to a crash just before 9 p.m. in the 2000 block of Holden Corso Road in Cedar on Monday, Aug. 28. Police arrived on scene to find a 21-year-old man standing roadside next to a BMW in the ditch.

According to an RCMP news release, the individual said he lost control on the rain-soaked road after attempting to make a turn. He was “relatively uninjured” but the release noted he was complaining of a sore chest.

The release added that a little earlier in the night, about 8:30 p.m., a pickup truck rolled over into a ditch on Jingle Pot Road and “an individual was seen running away from the crash.” Police later located the vehicle’s registered owner, but were unable to determine who had been driving it at the time of the incident.

“In the foreseeable future, all drivers should be prepared for slick conditions. When the rains come after long periods of drought, the rain mixed with oils on the roads can make for unpredictable slippery conditions,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, in the release. “The best advice we can offer is to reduce your speed according to the weather conditions and to be extra cautious when taking corners.”
