A Nanaimo non-profit will open up a fair trade shop this fall, selling ethically sourced items for the autumn and holiday seasons.

Global Village Nanaimo will open a store at 100-427 Fitzwilliam St. on Monday, Sept. 11, featuring new inventory of popular, fresh and unique products.

As climate change becomes more prevalent, consumers want companies to focus on sustainability, a press release noted, leading to increasing demand for stores such as Global Village Nanaimo.

“Global Village Nanaimo strives to bring as many ethical products to the Canadian market as possible, giving local consumers choices and opportunities to encourage the types of businesses they prefer to support with their purchases,” stated the press release. “They are also able to provide wholesale opportunities for other retailers and are happy to help promote other fair trade businesses in the area.”

New federal legislation asks companies to provide evidence they’ve taken measures to ensure child and forced labour aren’t used when sourcing products and Global Village Nanaimo says it adheres to that and is “a loud and proud supporter of workers in the global south,” the press release said.

Volunteers are sought to help operate the store, conduct inventory and serve on the board of directors.

The store on Fitzwilliam will remain open till Dec. 23.
