Nanaimo firefighters snuff out blaze at EV charging station

Incident happened Oct. 4 at Petro-Canada on Terminal Avenue

Firefighters in Nanaimo put their skills at battling electrical fires to the test when an electric vehicle charger caught fire this afternoon.

The alarm was sounded at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, when an EV charging station started smoking at the Petro-Canada gas station at the corner of Terminal and Princess Royal avenues.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded immediately, but their efforts to access the interior of the charge station and knock down the flames was hampered by the station’s locked steel outer casing, which eventually had to be cut and the lock pried open. Once opened a fire extinguisher quickly snuffed out the blaze.

No one was injured and it is not known if a vehicle was charging at the station when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
