The province is starting the new year on a positive note recognizing British Columbians for their generosity, service and selflessness, and a Nanaimo man has been posthumously honoured.

Craig Evans, a farmer and food security advocate who died last year, was announced Wednesday, Jan. 3, as one of 21 recipients of B.C.’s Medal of Good Citizenship.

“[He was] a dedicated advocate for community food systems and local food security on Vancouver Island…” noted a B.C. government press release. “Evans set the stage for enduring programs centred around growing and sharing locally grown, high-quality food.”

Evans helped build Nanaimo’s recycling program was a founder of Nanaimo Community Gardens, Nanaimo Foodshare Society and the Growing Opportunities Farm Community Co-operative. He was also a workforce trainer at Vancouver Island University.

“Even when Evans was facing a terminal illness, he continued to lay the groundwork for a sustainable future, ensuring a new generation can carry on the impactful programs he initiated,” the release stated. “His selfless contributions have touched the lives of countless individuals, enriching communities and leaving an indelible mark on Vancouver Island.”

Lana Popham, B.C.’s minister of tourism, arts, culture and sport was chairperson of the Medal of Good Citizenship selection committee and said in the release that it’s an honour to recognize unsung heroes from around the province.

“These people have gone out of their way to show kindness and help those in need, solely motivated by their desire to make life better for others,” she said.
