A house south of Nanaimo suffered significant damage and is uninhabitable after a fire last night

Firefighters responded to a call at a residence at Forest Hill Place in Cassidy at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, said Ron Gueulette, Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department fire chief. Two adults and a dog were able to escape uninjured, but the house was destroyed, he said.

“It was pretty much involved when [firefighters] got there,” said Gueulette.

Firefighters remained on scene overnight and extinguished one flare-up. Cranberry firefighters were assisted by departments from North Cedar, North Oyster and Extension.

“It is in a forested area, but it was pretty well ‘fire-smarted,’ so I don’t think there was much risk of it spreading there,” Gueulette said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but appears to have started in an attached garage.

“I did contact the Office of the Fire Commissioner, they’re going to send an investigator up to help with the investigation … probably not until Monday,” Gueulette said.

The homeowners are insured and are receiving assistance from Regional District of Nanaimo emergency services.
