A drug overdose advisory is in effect in Nanaimo.

Island Health issued a drug poisoning overdose advisory on Nov. 8 for the Nanaimo area, as well as in Campbell River and Victoria.

“Overdoses are increasing in Nanaimo,” the advisory noted. “Friends, family and community members using opioids and stimulants face increased risk from injection and inhalation.”

If someone overdoses, the health advisory advises calling 911, staying with the patient, providing naloxone if available, and giving the person one breath every five seconds.

Island Health suggests drug users visit the overdose prevention site at 250 Albert St., which is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. every day, where they can use drugs and get drugs checked.

Drug users should also carry naloxone, stagger their drug use with a friend so someone can respond if needed, know their tolerance, start by taking a small amount, and avoid mixing substances.

People using drugs alone should let someone know and ask them to check in, download the Lifeguard app at http://lifeguarddh.com, or call the national overdose response service at 1-888-688-6677.

Vancouver Island residents who wish to receive text alerts about overdose advisories can text ‘join’ to 253787. To be connected with mental health and substance use resources, call 1-888-885-8824.
