Nanaimo Fire Rescue has been called to the 1700 block of Townsite Road where a semi-tractor trailer rig’s trailer has pulled down communication lines.

The incident happened shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, when the rig’s driver pulled out of a commercial driveway onto Townsite Road and the rig’s trailer snagged the communication lines, pulling them down onto several parked cars.

The stress on the lines and utility poles also broke loose a power line, knocking out power to businesses and homes in the area.

Firefighters blocked off Townsite Road, between East Wellington and Bowen roads and between Graham Crescent and Bush Street, where a hydro power line was felled.

“Some businesses are without power and we’re just waiting for B.C. Hydro to tell us about safety and we’ll keep people back until then,” said Capt. Ian Stenberg of Nanaimo Fire Rescue. “We’ll be here until they tell us that it’s safe.”

No injuries were reported and the road will remained closed until B.C. Hydro can restore power and the communication lines are lifted from atop the vehicles they fell on.
