The City of Nanaimo is receiving provincial funding to help with two pedestrian projects.

The B.C. government announced this week that 80 projects around the province will share $24 million, and the two local projects receiving funding are a multi-use pathway at Beban Park along Labieux Road, and a sidewalk in the area of Departure Bay Eco-School.

Dan Coulter, B.C. minister of state for infrastructure and transit, said in a press release that more people each year are choosing to walk, run and cycle, and the province’s support helps provide more options.

“We’re funding active transportation infrastructure in Nanaimo to create safer routes for cyclists, pedestrians, and more,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo, in a separate news release. “This is a win-win for Nanaimo, helping people exercise, strengthen community connections, and fight climate change.”

The city will receive $500,000 for the Beban Park pathway and $182,500 to extend the Departure Bay Road sidewalk between Alan-A-Dale Place and Wardropper Park.
