ElderCollege series gets healthy

NANAIMO – VIU's ElderCollege Saturday Speaker Series takes a look at the health-care system.

By Marlene Robertson

I recently spent one of the most entertaining Saturdays I’ve had in years in a lecture hall at Vancouver Island University.

The stars were The WiseQuacks, two Victoria doctors, tackling the subject of health-care professionals, one of six Saturday Speakers Series on How Healthy Is Our Healthcare System?, presented by VIU’s ElderCollege.

Dr. Dave Hepburn and Dr. Rob Sealey, both practising medical doctors, presented their material in a seriously side-splitting bedside manner. Using humour to deliver their message, they talked about the massive changes in medicine over the last five years and what the future may hold.

Dr. Hepburn called it the ‘bio-intelligence age’ with an intersection of a tremendous number of technologies. Despite the serious subject, it was one the funniest and informative lectures on health care I’ve ever attended.

Don’t miss your chance to bone up on our health-care system. Plan now to take in the last three VIU ElderCollege Saturday Speaker Series: Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Saturday (March 16); Sustainability and You, March 23; and The System and Senior’s Care April 6.

This Saturday Speakers Series takes place at VIU’s Nanaimo campus, in Bldg. 250 Rm. 125.

Each session runs 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Space permitting, tickets for individual sessions will be sold at the door for $10 five minutes before the start of each presentation.
