City pushes recycling during Reuse Rendezvous

Unwanted household goods can get a second chance through the city’s annual Reuse Rendezvous.

Unwanted household goods can get a second chance through the city’s annual Reuse Rendezvous.

The citywide curbside swap meet is set for April 2-4.

The annual event celebrates reuse and keeps useful items out of the landfill.

Residents can help make it a success by marking items set out for others to take with a free tag and by removing and disposing of any leftovers after the event.

Bargain seekers are advised to drive with care, watch for children, and respect private and public property.

The spring 2011 edition, being delivered by Canada Post to Nanaimo homes starting March 22, also has news about how the Green Bin Program is cutting household garbage, expansion of kitchen waste collection, small appliance recycling, and the coming move of the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange to a larger site.

“Thanks to the efforts of the 8,200 Nanaimo households that have been receiving green bin food and kitchen waste collection service since last October, we’ve seen a 48-per cent drop in household garbage,” said Gary Franssen, manager of sanitation and recycling, in a press release.
