The Vancouver Island Symphony has completed its search for a new artistic director.

Cosette Justo Valdés has been announced as the new artistic director, following an appearance as a guest conductor for the symphony’s ‘Winter Song’ concert two months ago.

In a press release, Valdés said when she first met the musicians and staff of the orchestra, she was in awe of their incredible personal camaraderie, musical excellence and genuine kindness.

“We made music together with great joy instantly, and ever since that first collaboration, I have dreamt about the magic that each new experience ahead of us will bring,” she said.

Valdés will officially begin her tenure in July – although, according to the release, has already started planning the next season with concert master Calvin Dyck and executive director Margot Holmes.

Pierre Simard stepped down in early 2022 after 14 years, and at that time the symphony began its pursuit searching for someone to pass the baton to.
