Symphony seeks young choir voices

NANAIMO – Grade 5 students offered chance to perform with Rick Scott.

Grade 5 students in Nanaimo school district can audition for a new choir set to sing with award-winning children’s entertainer Rick Scott and the Vancouver Island Symphony at the Port Theatre.

The symphony’s Outreach and Education program is launching a three-part integrated music education program in partnership with three school districts  on the Island. Grade 4 students in all districts attend the symphony show, called My Symphony, with Scott and the Grade 5 choir.

In addition, the symphony will be sending a musician to perform at each school prior to students attending My Symphony.

“My Symphony will be introducing the musical instruments of the orchestra in a fun way to the students,” said Patricia Plumley, choir director.

Auditions happen Oct. 10 and Oct. 12. To audition, students can sing alone or in groups, performing their favourite song or something like Happy Birthday or O Canada.

Right after the auditions rehearsals begin once a week in preparation for extra outreach concerts.

“These will help the new choir get performance experience ready for the big show in February,” said Plumley. “We’ll start singing, dig in, and see what unfolds.”
